The private health insurance rebate is a Government incentive to help Australians afford health cover. A recent Government proposal will reduce this rebate for Australians aged 65 or more from April 2027.
If it becomes law, this change will mean older Australians will pay more for their health cover – probably hundreds of dollars more per person each year. This directly affects over 3 million Australians.
For older Australians earning under $105,000 (or $210,000 as a couple or family), the rebate would reduce by 4% in their 60s and 8% in their 70s. This is in addition to any inflation related premium increases in April.
Private Healthcare Australia is calling on the Government to not implement these changes. They suggest Australians contact their Federal MP to share their views on this proposal. Visit their website for details on how to add your voice to this discussion.
